Will Schwarz – Graphite Portraitist

About Will

Will Schwarz is an American graphite portraitist creating large-scale photo-realistic work in Iowa’s Driftless region. His grandfather, world-renowned artist Dean Schwarz, tutored him in graphite and ceramics from age 9. He is a student of the Bauhaus artistic movement, having studied at one of it’s successor institutions, South Bear School in Decorah, Iowa, where he now teaches summer workshops.

Will works in the medium of graphite pencils for it’s versatility and fine detail quality. He excels in bringing to life not only the likeness but also the character and emotions of each of his subjects.

Visual arts impacts every aspect of Will’s life, not just in graphite portraiture but also in the world of Cinema, in which he holds BA with Honors from the University of Iowa. When he’s not meticulously rendering photo-realistic portraits, he’s behind the camera, directing feature films alongside his friends and collaborators.
